VMware itself was acquired by EMC in 2004. But since 2011 VMware has been on an acquisition tear; the latest of which is Nicira, a provider of tools for creating software-defined networks (SDN).
That appetite for acquisition shows no signs of abating. But turning them all into strategic business assets might require a little work
